Archives, culture and former presidents: Péter Magyar’s announcements
Péter Magyar’s 2 November address set out plans to open state-security files, revise cultural spending and restrict former presidents’ benefits.
A timetable for opening the records
The Prime Minister announced that initial state-security registers would open this week, followed by recruitment files by 25 February 2027. He cautioned against judging individuals solely by a name in a register.
Cultural allocations remain subject to change
Magyar said institutional reviews would feed into amendments to the 2027 budget. He described the Hungarian Academy of Arts’ requested funding as unsettled and promised restructuring of the Magyarságkutató Institute and the Institute for National Strategy Research.
A bill promised on former presidents’ benefits
Magyar announced an end to former presidents’ discretionary foundation-support allowances. He also promised legislation withdrawing lifelong presidential benefits from those who did not complete their term.
